Stand back and make some room for this post.
The original Neverwinter Nights is is in my top 10 favorite games of all time. NWN2 is up against a formidable opponent, but this contest is strange. It reminds me of the show Alias, which I have been vigorously watching on DVD the last couple weeks, in that NWN2 is a clone of NWN. In Alias a couple people were genetically altered to look exactly like other people for nasty infiltration purposes. NWN2 is not “infiltrating” NWN, but it is very much a clone, only a better, stronger, faster one.
NWN2 has all the EXACT same music, sound effectssssss, and to some extend…the graphics. Regarding the music and sound effects: They are the SAME. This is annoying, because I don’t really feel like I am playing a different game, but just a better looking, updated, streamlined, 6 Billion Dollar Man version of the first one with a different story. The graphics are markedly improved. The textures are smooth and soft to the eye. Maybe that is just my $400 video card talking… I was actually impressed with the fact that I could not turn everything all the way up. Even with a near-uber video card, I had to turn stuff to medium. It still looked awesome. All I really did was turn off some shadows and stuff…big whoopty-do!
The game play is great, however. For the most part, it feels like you are playing NWN, but with a few enhancements. The quick-slots do not take up the whole damn screen anymore. There is a separate quick-slot bar for all your modes, now, so you don’t have to take up precious quick-slots for stealth and such. Instead you can have more healing and useful things in your normal quick-slots. I like all the user interface enhancements. Especially the right click menu…it is more like the rest of he world…you get a drop-down selection window of things you can do to whatever you just right-clicked on. Much better than what NWN originally had. That circular hodge-podge of nightmarish flowchart intercourse was pure evil with a capital P and E.
As far as following the rules goes, I think NWN2 is at times better than it’s parent. I tried to give my ranger, with dual-wield, a longsword and a shortsword, AND use the weapon finesse feat. NO GO. The weapon finesse feat can only be used with small weapons. The game caught my mistake, and punished me accordingly. Basically it wouldn’t use the feat…that was punishment…I wanted to use m longsword with weapon finesse…so powerful. I like all the normal prestige classes being in there, and I also like some of the obscure and made-up ones they added. Mostly, I liked that I could play a Drow, reap the Drow benefits and suffer the weaknesses. Dropping globes of darkness Drizzt-style on my enemies is more fun than you can imagine. Then, because I can see in the dark, I get a sneak attack on the bastards! Now I just need to find 2 magical scimitars and a cat-figurine companion…
Don’t get the game because I said so…get it if you liked the original and you want to continue the magic.
